Olga Kubassova, Image Analysis

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Image Analysis, Olga Kubassova has steered her business to success in Europe and a forthcoming expansion into the US.

Originally from Kazakhstan, Olga came to Leeds in 2004 with an undergraduate degree and two Master’s degrees already under her belt. Her PhD in Computer Science, which she completed in 2007, focused on the development of algorithms for automated analysis of MRI data, leading Olga to establish her company, Image Analysis, in order to commercialise the results of this research.

In partnership with sponsors, clinical research organisations, investigators, clinicians and academics, Image Analysis designs, facilitates and conducts clinical studies to aid drug development and also develops innovative technologies. One such technology is an image analysis platform, Dynamika, which helps improves clinicians’ understanding of treatments and their impact on patient conditions.

Olga first approached Spark, the University’s business start-up specialists, when she saw that her PhD findings had a wider commercial application and decided to start her own business.

Spark gave me my first office space and the team were a great deal of help in the technicalities of setting up a business and all the associated legal requirements.

A graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme, run in conjunction with Leeds University Business School, Olga views the programme as integral to her company’s rapid expansion and continued success.

It was a fantastic programme and incredibly useful. It opened my eyes to new opportunities and gave me the skills, knowledge and confidence to get my strategy right and move the business on to the stage.

Since completing the programme, Image Analysis moved operations to London and employed a team to take the business forward, resulted in the tripling of its turnover and creation of new revenue streams including software for medical trials.

Image Analysis now has a head office in London, a team in Leeds and plans to open an office in New York in 2013.

The London move came about naturally as our clients are worldwide so a London base made practical sense. We have now sold our first licence in the US and hope to expand our customer base there in the same way as we have already done in Europe, so a US office was the next logical step.
