Opportunities for first years

There is a growing number of experiences aimed at first year students that are informative, interesting and will assist you in your career planning. Attending these may help you when you apply for a summer internship at the end of your second year, or a year in industry.

Below are organisations that typically advertise opportunities for first year students.  These may be open days, insight days or Spring or Summer internships.

Deadlines for many of the banking and finance, and law opportunities are end of December or January, but you should check individual websites.
The schemes are competitive and early application is advised.

  • The Leeds Internship Programme – summer internships for first and second year students – typically in areas such as marketing, HR, Communications, Social Media, Policy, IT & Technology and Charity. These are advertised from March onwards for the summer 
  • Many large organisations will offer insight days and internships in a range of areas, such as finance, HR, marketing, logistics and technology  
  • BBC – international news, TV, sport
  • Barnados – various departments
  • CityView – technology event for female 1st and 2nd year students 
  • Enterprise Rent-a-car - management

  • SEO (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity) - for talented young people from underserved and underrepresented communities
  • JP Morgan - Proud to Be LGBT - Proud to Be LGBT is aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) undergraduate students. The event aims to give an overview of the various career opportunities that exist within an investment bank, and dispel some of the myths surrounding careers in the investment banking industry 
  • Freshlook Banking - FreshLook is a profile-raising event specifically designed to introduce first-year female students to the wide range of careers in investment banking 
  • Merrill Lynch Bank of America - Currently reviewing the university societies we will partner with for the 2013-2014 academic year. If you are an EMEA based student club or society, you can apply to Bank of America Merrill Lynch to sponsor you or an event you are hosting
