Discover career opportunities at United Nations | Tips and advice on how to apply and to maximise your chances of being successful

Date: 17 July 2020
Time: 14:00

Booking and Further Information

Have you ever thought about career at the United Nations (UN)? Would you like to learn about the range of amazing opportunities they offer? And discover tips and advice to maximise your chances when applying?

What is UN and why to work there?

The world looks to the United Nations for solutions to complex problems everywhere; from ending conflict and alleviating poverty, to combating climate change and defending human rights. The issues on our agenda are manifold and diverse as are the careers we offer. Among our ranks you will find staff members who monitor elections, disarm child soldiers, coordinate relief in humanitarian crises and provide administrative as well as logistical support to carry out our complex mandates. These are just a few examples amongst our many other equally critical and necessary functions.

The wide array of jobs means that you may change functions, departments, geographic locations, and even organizations or fields of work throughout your career in the Organization.

The diversity of our people, some 39,700 staff (as of 31 December 2016) from our 193 Member States, means that you will find yourself working in multi-cultural teams with people from all backgrounds and cultures who have wide perspectives, experiences, expectations as well as approaches.

Our work touches lives in every corner of the globe and our daily operations are complex, multifaceted and extended directly and indirectly to our 193 Members States.

Today, the United Nations has evolved beyond the conference management services it provided in its early days and is now actively on the ground around the globe seeking solutions to the three thematic areas outlined in its Charter: peace and security; the protection and promotion of human rights; and human development. Since 1946 the Organization has gradually transformed itself into a global Secretariat with a workforce that now numbers some 44,000 specialized men and women.

In the last decade, faced with rapidly unfolding changes in the global arena, the Organization underwent a metamorphosis to be more response oriented; today the United Nations has become a more reactive field-based operation with 60 per cent of its staff working away from Headquarters in locations all over the world.

Who are the speakers and what will happen during the webinar?

We have an excellent range of speakers including representatives from the following UN departments and agencies:

  • United Nations Talent Outreach
  • UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) based in Copenhagen, Denmark
  • UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) based in New York, USA
  • UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Fund) based in New York, USA
  • UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) based in Geneva, Switzerland
  • UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) based in Paris, France

Each of the representative will talk about the opportunities and career options at UN and its agencies, how to apply, the recruitment process and most importantly - sharing tips and advice on how to maximise your chances of being successful.

Please note that roles with UN are available in over 100 different countries around the world and this is an excellent opportunity to learn about range of career options including the young professional programme.
